Starting your own veggie garden

There are so many great opportunities here in Regina to purchase fresh veggies from local gardeners whether it be at the Farmer’s Market or Local and Fresh - but have you ever thought about supplementing your floral garden with some veggies? There are many benefits to starting a vegetable garden at home. Whether your desire is to engage your kids in it, rekindle a favorite family past time or because you are ready to try something new here are a few tips to get you started!

Don’t have a lot of space?

Consider planting tomatoes, peppers, patio eggplant, cucumber, herbs or spices which can all be planted in a pot! This is a great way to test your hand at starting a garden without taking up too much space.

Overwhelmed by the racks and racks of seeds at the garden centre and not sure where to start?

Some of the best veggies to start with are carrots, radishes, lettuce, and beets. Just start small, pick one or two things to try and each year add more to your repertoire.

How much space do I need to get started?

This is up to you! We recommend either starting with a pot or a 4’x4’ raised garden bed.

Is it too late to start planting?

Better now then never! If you’re just learning it is a great time to give it a try! Ideally it would be recommended to start your garden after May long weekend or when it doesn’t go below 8 degrees Celsius overnight.

Any other tips?

It’s all about the soil! Good soil is important. This paired with sunlight and water you are set up for success!
